Mixtapes playlist

Here are some links of mixtapes that I listen to pretty often lately.I know the new trend  is for artist to drop Cd /Mixtape /Songs every 2 seconds. And by the time you actually get use to the project it is already "as been". Well I don't really care and I do have all mixtapes on that list still on my playlist so I don't see why I wont be talking about them anymore.

Feel free to click on  the links if you do not have those yet, specially the most recent ones.

Meet......Sarah MK

So I realize that I was always blogging about people from outside Canada when we actually  have really talented people here. What a shame .
That's why (and also because she is dope) I'm introducing you to Ms "Sarah Mk " today.
She is a young ,beautiful and talented artist , member of the Kalmunity collective she released her first EP " Worth It "  last Thursday (November 4th) at O Patro Vys ! Venue was jam packed. It was a beautiful evening great vibe and she blessed us with a little performance! She definitively has what it takes to grow in the music industry. Really comfortable on stage she knows how to play with the crowd and she sure CAN sing. That was an A+ night.
The EP is quite as good. Not disappointed at all. Great instru, catchy lyrics, and most importantly you feel the PASSION behind it ....

Take some time to at least listen to it ........... "Worth it" (ahah it was an easy one)
you can buy the EP on her Bandcamp  (click on the link). Support good music !!!

Below a short footage of her performing at the Launch party (sorry for how It stops but I was running out of space) enjoy..........

"Freedom Fighter "New Raheem Devaughn Mixtape ......#OCCUPYYOUREARS

My boy Raheem is back more than ever.............. But first let put that tape in context
Like many of you may know (hopefully) the world is actually going through  real tuff times. Poverty is increasing tremendously , and with the recent economic crisis its getting worst and worst . This is more or less where the people starting the #OccupyWallStreet (OWS) movement came from. Try to educate people about that 99% vs 1%(the 1% representing the wealthiest person in the american population) and hopefully make things change by having a pacific protestation. .The movement even  made some babies and you can now find people camping in over 70 cities around the world. Ok but whats the link with the tape.????? For those not really familiar with Raheem (I assume that you don't know me then lol) besides singing ultra sexy song and having girls writing about his skills in bed in mediatakeout, he is and always has been a very activist and conscious writer and singer.
On Martin Luther King memorial inauguration day (October 16th),  he also participate to a non-violent march along side Dr. Cormell West and end up being arrested with 18 others pacific protesters. I guess that experience inspired and motivated Mister Devaughn for bringing us more quality work on educating people via his words and music.

The tape is feat songs from album 1 (The Love experience) and album 3 (The Love and War MasterPEACE) as well as Urban Ave 31 songs.

A must listen take 45 minutes of your time and feed your ears and thoughts.

Here is the link  -----> Freedom Fighter <------------

Here is a video of Raheem right after his 24 hours in jail

Beats Rhymes & Life ......The travel of a Tribe Called Quest

So two weeks ago I had the chance to go see that MAGNIFICENT documentary by Mike Rappaport. I was so excited that a Montreal theater was showing the doc that I didnt even wait to find people to go see it with me. I went BY MYSELF. And surprisely (or not if you really know Montreal ) I was ALONE in the room for the first 20 minutes of the doc. I really don't understand why more people didn't come to see that piece of art. Well..........

Here is how  Mr. Rappaport describes the reason of doing that documentary  :

" I always looked at them like a Rock'N Roll group , you know for me they are the same thing as the Rolling Stones , Led Zepplin or Ramones and those groups have all been documented more than once, and tribe to me is equivalent , and all those group from the golden era of hip hop they are the same thing to me .....like Melly Mel , Grand Master Flash , De La Soul , Eric B &  Rakim , Big Daddy Kane, who doesnt wanna tell a story of those guys life ......That's really what it was for me . "

I have to say that Mike Rappaport just did  great. And its for sure  a classic documentary right  here . I really like how he let the audience just make their own opinion of the drama and how most importantly he didnt focus that much on it. Phife energetic  love for basketball makes you wanna watch the playoff right away, and his  diabetes journey is beautiful and inspiring, Q-Tip Creativity and passion is just tremendously inspiring. Am I also happy that he did include Jaroibi in the wagon. And well Ali Shaheed is just amazingly calm and wise ,and inspiring as well , you cant ask for more :). And yea INSPIRING is the word bt I think you already know that.

The doc definitely higlighted the importance of the group in the Hip Hop legacy particulary with that trade of  using Jazz Samples. Pharell Williams , Common and Barry Weiss comments/interviews are those who marked me the most. It was easy to get emotional and fall more for Hip hop listening to those guys.

Some people may disagree but I think it is great that Rapapport included the beefs and actually show the real temperature in the group in today's day. Thats what makes this doc even more real I think.

I would have love to have a little part on Q-tip conversion to islam, I think it is also a very important factor in the group evolution , but I guess we will have to  leave that on the grey zone.

I cant wait for it to be out in DVD ! A Must have.

release date across the US------> click here <-----

Of course all the hip hop heads got all hyped after watching that doc ( I dont know any who doesnt personally)  thanks to one of my sweet follower on twitter I even find a great podcast : Special Native Tongue .

A must listen : 2 hours of songs from the Native Tongue and discussion on the documentary and the all Tribe Called Quest movement. I loved it

The Soul Sister Show :    The Native Thong Episode

Well I think I have said enuf go support that " chef d'oeuvre "

Loso in case u didnt know so ...........FABOLOUS concert Montreal July 28th 2k11

So last thursday my "wifey " (who also happen to be a huge fabolous fan) asked me to go see fabolous live with her.
Lemme just say that Fab performance was really good he went back with song like superwoman , holla back , into you , he did a really nice Nate dogg tribute and sang couple of song of his new mixtape : the soul tape. all that in less than an hour lol .

Yea I was quite disapointed because I was expecting a real show and not some damn hollywood party. The venue (theatre Telus) was really nice but the "carre VIP" right in fromt of the stage was non sense for me . I do agree that the advertisement for this event was show + after at the same spot. But you dont start the performance at 1:50 am  and then let people hang for all that time when THE SHOW was suppose to start at 9 pm smh.

If you are afraid that people wont stay for the after , then dont do one .Instead you forcing people to stay all the way to the end by  putting the performance late in the evening , after hours of djs spinning one after the other. The positive part is that I had to discover some montreal talents. Didn't catch all the name tho......

ANYWAYS I still had a great time but I wish I had the memo .....

Here are 2 footages of that night
1- Nate dogg tribute + holla back
2- so into u

The revolution will not be televised ....... R.I.P. Gil Scott Heron

Last friday dear Mr Scott-Heron passed away at the age of 62. He is leaving behind him timeless poems speeches and records. I couldnt qualify myself as a neo-soul fan and not post a small note in memory of this inspirational character. More than 30 years after his first successes he is still a model and influence for a lot of artists. We have lost greatness......... May he rest in peace

Meet OFWGKTA :Odd Future Wolfgang Kill Them All

Last Wednesday , I tune in to the hip Hop blog ( a radio show) for the first time. One of the host was kind introducing a new talent : Tyler the Creator . This week a artist that I'm following closely (NikeNando ) release a new freestyle , and he was spitting on Tyler the creator 's Yonkers track.  Few month ago , one of my twitter buddy introduced me to Tyler 's work , I was quiet skeptical at first . I have to admit that I found him very weird and I wasnt sure if i was really digging the Yonkers video. But I'm curious and after a couple of week I looked for more and I started to like him more and more. After that one of my friends introduce me to Franck Ocean (more singing Rnbish) , and his mixtape Nostalgia. I soon figured that those two were both member of this group called OFWGKTA : Odd Future Wolfgang Kill Them All. (often called Odd Future). Those young boys are really emerging and really talented I am not familiar with all of them but those that I star listening to are really interesting,.am definitely looking for more from them.
Frank Ocean , Tyler the Creator (and Hodgy Beats) are for sure artists that you should have a look on for years to come. Raw talent from A to Z. I even heart on that radio show that big names are already starting to fight for Tyler (Good Looking out)  He should release a new piece next month ( may 10th)  : Goblin.
In Total those young oddfuture  released 4 mixtapes and 8 studio albums. Hustling Hard / Hard workers and they all under 25 just for that you should take the time to listen if you are not familiar with them.

Here are the members of the group and their website below :

Tyler the Creator
Frank Ocean
Hodgy Beats
Mike G
Earl Sweatshirt
Jasper Dolphin
Taco Bennett
Domo Genesis
Syd the Kid
Left Brain
The super 3
Their first tape is available on their website : odd future
or just click here
I am looking for the Frank Ocean Tape everywhere cant seem to find it (it has been remove from Mediafire) If you really looking forward to listen to it ! Send me a message i'll send it to you. (it is amazing )

The Yonkers video :

Heemy taugh me : New Raheem Devaughn Mixtape / Compilation

New Raheem Devaughn Mixtape is finally out . I won't say that I am disappointed because I already love the majority of all those songs. But I have to admit that I was looking for more new materials or even more Jacks. This mixtape is more like a perfect introduction for a public not to familiar with his work.  I would rename it Raheem Devaughn Greatest "hits" / "songs" : Heemy taugh me .  So for those of you hearing me talkin about "Rah" 24/7 go download the tape you will have a taste of good panties droppa songs from his 3 albums plus  some Usher /Trey Songz/ Andree300 Jacks .  click--------> here <------for the download link

For those not familiar with new Kanye West album (my beautiful dark fantasy )The heemy taugh me concept  is from there. Its like a wink of his relationship with Amber Rose.
I really like how Raheem played with that ! click on the link ----> Blame Game feat John Legend go at   5'29    you will uderstand betta)

Plus for those enjoying this slow jam tape don't forget Panties Droppa vol 1 hosted by Yours truly is still available ----------> panties droppa vol 1

The industry world : A&R consultants

Music is the voices  the instruments , the melody, them producers, them writters etc...., But music is also a very poweful and emblematique business since forever generating millions and millions years after years. People more often refer to it as  "the industry". Well I then find interesting to potrait different functions of it on the blog. I actually wrote this article few months ago, and decided not to published it for no good reasons , but last weekend I was watching (for the 100 times ) the movie Cadillac Records and it just push me to publish the article finally. (a must see movie click on the lick to see the previews )

Today focus will be on A&R consultants......

Whats an A&R consultant ? A&R stands for Artists and repertoire. You know them people that you always see in the thanks or after the thank you on a CD booklet To make a long story short he / she is like a HeadHunter looking for whats popin or what could be the new wave in the industry. So once the new "pearl" is found he / she needs to convince him to join the label he /she is working for. Pretty cool hein  ??? Once everything is set and close and that the artist as a project on,  A&R can also be part of the strategic marketing. Whats the difference already with an HR headhunters ????? hmmm None execpt that A&R are working with artists !SO its even better
So those who knows me well already have an idea of where i'm trying to go , def got the skills for that and lets not  talk about the motivation cause its even nastier.
But if you know me as well  you know what I think of the industry right now no   more talent , its more about Asses , sex drugs and money . So I dont think I 'll be as effecient as I could be with "real" artists. Is it really what the people wants ? entertainers !! whats about Musicians , lyricists , and the communication that music brings , I mean Music is even like school sometimes . But I do not think that its really what the people want, it is more what the industry is making them  think thats whats they want (another debate). But people are not affraid to still BELIEVE #THEDREAMISREAL, and fend for themselves, a nice exemple is Mister Raheem Devaughn and is new indie label built with his homie @drethemayor : 368MusicGroup

Challenging position in that industry but challenge is fun !

I  had the chance to chit chat with one member or the 368musicgroupteam see below  :

5 minutes with Ray aka NAuwgie368 aka Comissioner368 : A&R consultant for 368musigroup

Musikalista : Lets start with a little presentation of yourself
Nauwgie : My name is Ray Toatley but they call me Nauwgie and im in my mid twenties.

Musikalista What made you have a try in the music industry ?
Nauwgie : I have always loved music , its my passion so i wanted to be around it .

M: How many artist are you actually taking care of right now ?
N: I just have 2 for now . I had 10 one time but they couldnt weather the storm, they were impatient.

M : Are you seeking for more ?
N: I do want more when I get these better established. I dont want my plate too full and people relying on me and then getting pulled in too many directions

M:What are you looking for in an artist / group ?
N:I look for artist that kinda is  independant,   that also know their music  and no matter how good it is they will need to always push it and be a face fore themselves.

M: How do you find about new music ?
NI look on hip hop websites for new music. I hate the radio. The hip hop game is so watered down. No substance.

M:What do you think of the industry right now ?
N: The industry SUCKS

M:Do you think you could ever push an artist that does music that you dont like just to satisfy your label or you will rather quit and try somewhere else ?
N:Yes I could push that artist depending on his / her passion and work ethic . Scared money dont make money.

M:Whats on rotation on your Itunes / ipod / blackberry lately ?
N:I keep it 368 of course , but also a lot of oldies stuff 90s hip hop and RnB , not too much into new stuff , but I do listen to J Cole and Joe Budden.

M: Do you still believe in CD'S or you more like teamitunes ?
N: I still believe in Cd but I think that Cd'S are like Karma.

M:Whats the last album that you bought ?
N: Kanye West x My Beautiful Dark Twisted fantasy

M:Who is inspiring you ?
N: MUSIC most definitely it inspires me as well as Life in general.

M:Where do you see yourself in a couple of years (5 to 10 )
N:I see myself with a couple of business (Group homes)

M:Any advice for people wanted to star an A&R consultant career ?
N:Hard work, never stop learning and pursue all your dreams. Do not let no one tell you that you CANT do something .....

Hope yall enjoy the article

Below a video of 368MusicGroup artist you almost find them all in that track enjoy   The winner circle x Till The Lights Come On ,...........

13. Vaughn Anthony aka John Legend little brother

SO not easy to try to have a name in the music industry when your brother is already a big name. And its really whats going on with Mister Vaughn Anthony he is suffering from what i called the Solange Knowles Syndrome for being John Legend brother.  Hopefully he is going to be signed one day and the world will know that the guy really got something.

coming soon..... pretty quiet lately but hopefully he is going to release something soon.

More and more great artists are popping up, making love with the words, and making us music lover /lyrical guru/ getting hyped and satisfied. Unfortunately this might be 2 real for the "mass" who rather listen to "fist pump" music. The Road to Paid Dues Tour : March 8th Ottawa ON

So yesterday me and my girls decided to go all the way to Ottawa for an Hip Hop concert. The Road to Paid Dues tour was stopping in the capital @ritual Nighclub.
After a 2 hours drive we made it just in time the show actually started a second after we arrived.
The place was pretty empty at the beginning  I was really surprised. The group Whole Wheat Bread open up the concert with a very rock'n Roll ish note. Im not really into that usually but I was still having fun and dancing  (I think I was the only one dancing at this part of the night lol #sad) . The lead singer then spitted some bars about why he doesn't want to be with a girl under 70. Really good ! They finally ended their performance with a track featuring Murs who came on stage with a crazy energy.
Ab-soul was following with a really #kushy #swag vibe. I found him fun and I actually really enjoy the Moscato track feat Kendrick Lamar watch here -----> Ab-soul feat Kendrick Lamar x Moscato
3rd act : (the one I came for): mister TABI BONNEY. He killed it I wasnt disappointed at all. Tabi sang Get me , beat Rock ( I'm from DC) , Nunthin but a hero (my fav track ♥) , The Pocket  Jet Setter and more he also spit some Too short and some Big Daddy Kane. He give the montreal girls (us) the shoutout severals times during the show . whoop whoop.
We had the chance to chat with him at the end of the show really nice person and really down to earth.
Murs took the stage after a little music break gave by DJ Foundation.
The crowd went crazy , Like I said I was more there for mister Bonney so we didnt stay until the end. But Murs did his Job it was really good as well.

A night to remember........

J Holiday presents M.I.A The Lost Pages

The guy who brought you to bed is back with a new mixtape. I was really excited when I "heard"of the news on twitter. But I have to say that I was a bit disappointed after my first listening . You have to understand that I was hoping to meet the Grammy nominated guy who explosed in 2007 with an AMAZING album that I am still having on repeat  ----> Back of my lack.  He wasnt there, but someone not too far from him hosted this tape. The beats used are really good, I liked the OH Sheila cover, its nice to go back that far sometimes. It is not a panties droppa tape still a lot of hip hop (i'm not complaining) but Mister Holiday proves us that he is not going anywhere, and hopefully he will make us forget his second album. :)
Looking forward for a 3rd one.

Fav track : Lust feat Black Cobain (it is actually a Cobain song )  (i am having this song on repeats for more than a month now)

Follow him on twitter he is really down to earth and he does answer your tweets -----> @KingJholiday

Enjoy............

Montreal is a city full of talent , Designer , Model , singers , dancers , rapper, producers yeaa we have many . but today i've decide to focus on a talented Beat maker who is slowly making is mark on the game.
So we met last week and he accepted to answer honestly to all my questions.

Melomayne : I 'm 22 years old, and i'm studying actuarial affairs at UQAM (Universite du Quebec à Montréal). I am born an raised in Montreal but I'm from Zaire Africa.I am a christian and religion is really important in my life . I have 3 sisters and i'm close to them. I use to play soccer for 9 years.I was in Gatineau (ontario) the last 2 years to start Uni, it helped me grow a lot so much more responsabilities being by myself and i also had a lot of time to work on my music when i was there. Finally I LOVE FOOOD specialy the MWEMBE chicken that my mother is doing.

Musi: What place does music have in your life ?
Melo : Music has a huge place in my life. I'm looking foward to live of music. Music is a great way for me to get out my everyday routine. I listen to music 24/7 , and when i'm not is always playing on my head. I can even listen to music when i'm studying because i'm thinking about it too much and i can't focus. I  am actually reading a very interesting book : The art of mixing 2nd edition by David Gibson. Im learning a lot from this book.

Musi: Why didnt you try to study in music then ?
Melo: To be honest is really for security reasons. You know this industry is not easy. But also i didnt want to deceive my parents school is important for them.

Musi: When did you decide that music was really what you want to do in your life
Melo: It started when i was around 15 years old. My cousin who im actually working with now show me how to do beats through a program: FRUITY LOOPS STUDIO. I was so proud of th first beat that i made that i was listening to it 24/7 for a week. Now I realize that it was not good at all (laughs). after that i was working on this program ery single day trying to improve myself. But i would say that its really 2 years ago that I really committed myself to music and decide that i wanted to do a career about it. My objectives are to open my own studio and to be a name in the industry.

Musi: Whats is your speciality ? I wanna know what is Melomayne is really recognize for.
Melo: I am different than the others beat makers. I have a special style. No Gamz production (himself and his cousin D.Vader) had just created a new sound , we style looking for a name for it cause it is SPECIAL you'll see. I think its the style that will lead us to sucess. but besides that we do a lot of other things.

Musi: Who is inspiring you ? Why ?
Melo: In Montreal i would Say :

  1. Full-Klips he has a very different style
  2. Pharenz/s he is dope he also have his own style but i can relate to him tho.
In the industy i would say :
  1. Drumma Boy  http://www.drum-squad.com/
  2. Lex Luger  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeiKiWjgXlA
  3. Dr DRe
  4. Swizz beats
  5. timbaland  and finally
  6. Zaythoven http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPWdWkubgTY
Musi: I am surprised that you are not mentioning MR WEST !
Melo: No , i respect what he is doing  i think that what he is doing is mad original , but not difficult at all anybody can do it. He is using Samples too much.

Musi: Who would you like to see on your beats
Melo: T.I., Rick Ross, Gucci ( ahahah those who knows me can already imagine the face that i made lol musikalista ) . I think all those artists have a flow matching the beats that i'm making. I would love to see Drake as well cause he is different. But really i'm really open i dont have any barriers i mostly do hip hop beats but i would love to try other things specially reggae / dancehall

Musi: Whats your "Lab "looks like ?
Melo: My Macbook and my keyboard "akai MPK49" are my two babies.  im missing some good speakers but its comin......

Musi: What do you think of the industry right now ?
Melo: Too many people are trying to do music , trying to reach the "american" dream. ANd its so much more accesible now , internet , shows like american idol , star academy are really changing the game. And the big problem in a city like Montreal is that everybody wants to be a rapper and we have a small industry so it is killing it.

Musi: What do you think of new technologies and social network tools(facebook Youtube Twitter etc.. )
Melo: It is defenetly a plus , it allows a great visibility. It is more easy to network. I mainly use my faceook for promotions well as Twitter and sounclick. But on the other side everybody has the same access, EVERYBODY so u have to work harder for people to notice you.

Musi: Did you start working with any artist so far?
Melo : Yes mainly in montreal , i am giving my beats to rapper its a way fo me to be more visible, and to build my name.

Musi: Why do you think Canada have difficulties to retain talents , everybody is flying to the States or to europe ?
Melo: I think the gouv is not investing enuff money in hip hop because the associate violence with this music, so there are no structures, its to hard to build something here so people leave and try in the states or elsewhere. The other thing is that the hip hop community is NOT UNITED at all here in montreal everybody is rep his hood and not supporting the others thats sad , cause we have mad talent in this city .

Musi: Do you think this could change ?
Melo: Yes i do Montreal is the future. It is a trendy city and more and more people are putting montreal on the map. Big labels could have their spot here ...who knows.

Musi: thanks for your time , any s/o
Melo: s/o to my couz and partner DEE VADER he is killin those productions.s/o to my manager G5status . s/o to everybody who is starting to do music keep it up neva give up NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. and finally s/o to my girl she is always cheering me up thank you for believing in me.

                                                                                                                              enjoy.......
