Beats Rhymes & Life ......The travel of a Tribe Called Quest
So two weeks ago I had the chance to go see that MAGNIFICENT documentary by Mike Rappaport. I was so excited that a Montreal theater was showing the doc that I didnt even wait to find people to go see it with me. I went BY MYSELF. And surprisely (or not if you really know Montreal ) I was ALONE in the room for the first 20 minutes of the doc. I really don't understand why more people didn't come to see that piece of art. Well..........
Here is how Mr. Rappaport describes the reason of doing that documentary :
" I always looked at them like a Rock'N Roll group , you know for me they are the same thing as the Rolling Stones , Led Zepplin or Ramones and those groups have all been documented more than once, and tribe to me is equivalent , and all those group from the golden era of hip hop they are the same thing to me .....like Melly Mel , Grand Master Flash , De La Soul , Eric B & Rakim , Big Daddy Kane, who doesnt wanna tell a story of those guys life ......That's really what it was for me . "
I have to say that Mike Rappaport just did great. And its for sure a classic documentary right here . I really like how he let the audience just make their own opinion of the drama and how most importantly he didnt focus that much on it. Phife energetic love for basketball makes you wanna watch the playoff right away, and his diabetes journey is beautiful and inspiring, Q-Tip Creativity and passion is just tremendously inspiring. Am I also happy that he did include Jaroibi in the wagon. And well Ali Shaheed is just amazingly calm and wise ,and inspiring as well , you cant ask for more :). And yea INSPIRING is the word bt I think you already know that.
The doc definitely higlighted the importance of the group in the Hip Hop legacy particulary with that trade of using Jazz Samples. Pharell Williams , Common and Barry Weiss comments/interviews are those who marked me the most. It was easy to get emotional and fall more for Hip hop listening to those guys.
Some people may disagree but I think it is great that Rapapport included the beefs and actually show the real temperature in the group in today's day. Thats what makes this doc even more real I think.
I would have love to have a little part on Q-tip conversion to islam, I think it is also a very important factor in the group evolution , but I guess we will have to leave that on the grey zone.
I cant wait for it to be out in DVD ! A Must have.

Of course all the hip hop heads got all hyped after watching that doc ( I dont know any who doesnt personally) thanks to one of my sweet follower on twitter I even find a great podcast : Special Native Tongue .
A must listen : 2 hours of songs from the Native Tongue and discussion on the documentary and the all Tribe Called Quest movement. I loved it
The Soul Sister Show : The Native Thong Episode
Well I think I have said enuf go support that " chef d'oeuvre "

Loso in case u didnt know so ...........FABOLOUS concert Montreal July 28th 2k11
So last thursday my "wifey " (who also happen to be a huge fabolous fan) asked me to go see fabolous live with her.
Lemme just say that Fab performance was really good he went back with song like superwoman , holla back , into you , he did a really nice Nate dogg tribute and sang couple of song of his new mixtape : the soul tape. all that in less than an hour lol .
Yea I was quite disapointed because I was expecting a real show and not some damn hollywood party. The venue (theatre Telus) was really nice but the "carre VIP" right in fromt of the stage was non sense for me . I do agree that the advertisement for this event was show + after at the same spot. But you dont start the performance at 1:50 am and then let people hang for all that time when THE SHOW was suppose to start at 9 pm smh.
If you are afraid that people wont stay for the after , then dont do one .Instead you forcing people to stay all the way to the end by putting the performance late in the evening , after hours of djs spinning one after the other. The positive part is that I had to discover some montreal talents. Didn't catch all the name tho......
ANYWAYS I still had a great time but I wish I had the memo .....
Here are 2 footages of that night
1- Nate dogg tribute + holla back
2- so into u
