Musikalista : Tell me a little bit more about yourself
Melomayne : I 'm 22 years old, and i'm studying actuarial affairs at UQAM (Universite du Quebec à Montréal). I am born an raised in Montreal but I'm from Zaire Africa.I am a christian and religion is really important in my life . I have 3 sisters and i'm close to them. I use to play soccer for 9 years.I was in Gatineau (ontario) the last 2 years to start Uni, it helped me grow a lot so much more responsabilities being by myself and i also had a lot of time to work on my music when i was there. Finally I LOVE FOOOD specialy the MWEMBE chicken that my mother is doing.
Musi: What place does music have in your life ?
Melo : Music has a huge place in my life. I'm looking foward to live of music. Music is a great way for me to get out my everyday routine. I listen to music 24/7 , and when i'm not is always playing on my head. I can even listen to music when i'm studying because i'm thinking about it too much and i can't focus. I am actually reading a very interesting book : The art of mixing 2nd edition by David Gibson. Im learning a lot from this book.
Musi: Why didnt you try to study in music then ?
Melo: To be honest is really for security reasons. You know this industry is not easy. But also i didnt want to deceive my parents school is important for them.
Musi: When did you decide that music was really what you want to do in your life
Melo: It started when i was around 15 years old. My cousin who im actually working with now show me how to do beats through a program: FRUITY LOOPS STUDIO. I was so proud of th first beat that i made that i was listening to it 24/7 for a week. Now I realize that it was not good at all (laughs). after that i was working on this program ery single day trying to improve myself. But i would say that its really 2 years ago that I really committed myself to music and decide that i wanted to do a career about it. My objectives are to open my own studio and to be a name in the industry.
Musi: Whats is your speciality ? I wanna know what is Melomayne is really recognize for.
Melo: I am different than the others beat makers. I have a special style. No Gamz production (himself and his cousin D.Vader) had just created a new sound , we style looking for a name for it cause it is SPECIAL you'll see. I think its the style that will lead us to sucess. but besides that we do a lot of other things.
Musi: Who is inspiring you ? Why ?
Melo: In Montreal i would Say :
- Full-Klips he has a very different style
- Pharenz/s he is dope he also have his own style but i can relate to him tho.
In the industy i would say :
Melo: No , i respect what he is doing i think that what he is doing is mad original , but not difficult at all anybody can do it. He is using Samples too much.
Musi: Who would you like to see on your beats
Melo: T.I., Rick Ross, Gucci ( ahahah those who knows me can already imagine the face that i made lol musikalista ) . I think all those artists have a flow matching the beats that i'm making. I would love to see Drake as well cause he is different. But really i'm really open i dont have any barriers i mostly do hip hop beats but i would love to try other things specially reggae / dancehall
Musi: Whats your "Lab "looks like ?
Melo: My Macbook and my keyboard "akai MPK49" are my two babies. im missing some good speakers but its comin......
Musi: What do you think of the industry right now ?
Melo: Too many people are trying to do music , trying to reach the "american" dream. ANd its so much more accesible now , internet , shows like american idol , star academy are really changing the game. And the big problem in a city like Montreal is that everybody wants to be a rapper and we have a small industry so it is killing it.
Musi: What do you think of new technologies and social network tools(facebook Youtube Twitter etc.. )
Melo: It is defenetly a plus , it allows a great visibility. It is more easy to network. I mainly use my faceook for promotions well as Twitter and sounclick. But on the other side everybody has the same access, EVERYBODY so u have to work harder for people to notice you.
Musi: Did you start working with any artist so far?
Melo : Yes mainly in montreal , i am giving my beats to rapper its a way fo me to be more visible, and to build my name.
Musi: Why do you think Canada have difficulties to retain talents , everybody is flying to the States or to europe ?
Melo: I think the gouv is not investing enuff money in hip hop because the associate violence with this music, so there are no structures, its to hard to build something here so people leave and try in the states or elsewhere. The other thing is that the hip hop community is NOT UNITED at all here in montreal everybody is rep his hood and not supporting the others thats sad , cause we have mad talent in this city .
Musi: Do you think this could change ?
Melo: Yes i do Montreal is the future. It is a trendy city and more and more people are putting montreal on the map. Big labels could have their spot here ...who knows.
Musi: thanks for your time , any s/o
Melo: s/o to my couz and partner DEE VADER he is killin those productions.s/o to my manager G5status . s/o to everybody who is starting to do music keep it up neva give up NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE. and finally s/o to my girl she is always cheering me up thank you for believing in me.
